Turkiye's World Cup Run...

Key player: Rustu Recber, goalkeeper Hasan Sas, Left Winger.

Coach: Senol Gunes.

Making first World Cup appearance in 48 years, Turkiye could go deep into the tournament. Will be dependent on 31-year-old striker Hakan Sukur, who averages a goal every two games for national side. Hakan Suker scores the fastest ever World Cup goal as Turkiye beat South Korea 3-2 to claim third place.. Recber, recovering from back problems in Germany, is considered among Europe's best goalkeepers. Without Recber, Turkiye will not advance - his backups Omer Catkıc are not top calibre.the knockout stages where Turkiye soon brought Japan and Senegal's fantastic World Cup runs to an end.

Certainly the team has benefited from many of the players playing their club football outside Turkey, such as Emre Belozoglu and Umit Davala in Serie A as well as Yildiray Basturk in Germany.
Other foreign-based players Kerimoglu Tugay (who plays for England's Blackburn) and Alpay Ozalan (England's Aston Villa) have to step up.

Ilhan Mansiz made his debut for Turkiye as a substitute during their final group-stage qualifier against Moldova in October 2001. The speedy striker earned his way onto coach Senol Gunes' squad on the strength of an outstanding 2001-2002 season for Besiktas, when he led the Turkish league in scoring and helped the squad to a third-place finish. Ilhan Mansiz celebrates scoring the golden goal four minutes into extra-time that put Turkiye into their first-ever semi-finals

Turkiye’s unexpected run of victories catapults them to heady new heights (12th, up 10) from which they can set their sights on the Top Ten.
